Mag+ Prototype for a Digital Magazine

It seems that every day we’re seeing a new concept for how the gestural screen/tablet can be used. This time, the Mag+ Prototype, a conceptual video and collaborative research project between Bonnier and BERG, uses the model to propose a new digital magazine.  While I think the concept is a natural evolution, and has exciting possibilities in terms of UI, UX, and interaction design, I’m still waiting for the forthcoming reality of flexible rather than rigid LCD screens.

The concept aims to capture the essence of magazine reading, which people have been enjoying for decades: an engaging and unique reading experience in which high-quality writing and stunning imagery build up immersive stories.

The purpose of publishing this concept video is first and foremost to spark a discussion around the digital reading experience in general, and digital reading platforms in particular. Thus, we would be more than happy to hear what you have to say regarding the concept and ideas expressed in the video: the magazine reading experience, digital browsing, text versus images, as well as hear about your own digital reading experiences and thoughts. We are all ears.

You can follow and contribute to the discussion at their blog.

A very well thought out interface that considers most of the possibilities. But the one that many of us will miss and have to live without, unless there is a solution found is the "leafing through" the magazine. That is a challenge.

The little embedded video is great. On IE8 it would not expand to full screen, however. In any event, wow. 6:35… we need this in any e-reader. What device are they using in the video and how "indestructible" is it?

Hmm, I don’t know, I only like digital technology where it fills in holes.. I don’t see any difficulties in paper magazines? Lack of paper in the future? Invent something else, something syntethic maybe..

To the previous commenter who said "invent something synthetic" WTF????. This is awesome. Digital publishing solves the matter of printing, transportation, production and over-production and gets people the info they need (or want) right away. Get over the whole paper thing, Carl. What kind of "freedom of speech" was there when only the wealthy (or those willing to be pimped by corporate advertisers) could afford to distribute information to the masses? This is the future, I am so glad I’m young.

@Lisa I’m 17 years old, i’m a huge tech freak. And I’m not against the technology.. the software of digital magazines. But against those e-book readers like the kindle. I don’t get it. You have a point in; it solves the problem of transportation and production. But you can’t ignore the fact that if everyone has to get his ebook-reader, this will also bring overproduction. Don’t forget that paper is biodegradable, hardware isn’t. We really have to rethink our massive production of electronic devices… (http://tinyurl.com/dbmbtm) I’m not a greenpeace fan, but it’s a hard fact. So.. my view; I don’t like replacing paper magazines through a bunch of hardware too read digital magazines. But I support the technology to make digital magazines better to display on laptops (pc’s) or smartphones.
