{"id":1032,"date":"2005-08-23T10:54:17","date_gmt":"2005-08-23T05:54:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/emilychang.com\/blog\/?p=1032"},"modified":"2009-07-26T10:55:05","modified_gmt":"2009-07-26T05:55:05","slug":"wikipedia-for-all","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emilychang.com\/blog\/2005\/08\/wikipedia-for-all\/","title":{"rendered":"Wikipedia for all"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of my all-time favorite websites is the <a title=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wikipedia.org\/\">wikipedia<\/a> &#8211; partly because I\u2019ve used it for many years to look up terms, concepts, historical facts; also because I like to link to its pages for terms where I want to provide context; but mostly because of its altruistic and utopian perspective.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Imagine a world in which every person has free access<br \/>\nto the sum of all human knowledge. That\u2019s what we\u2019re doing.<br \/>\n&#8211; from <a title=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wikipedia.org\/\">wikipedia<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There aren\u2019t many things in this world that focus on <em>access to knowledge<\/em> and <em>being free<\/em>.\u00a0 These two goals are counter to any major <a title=\"previous post about corporations\" href=\"http:\/\/www.artcodes.com\/go\/e\/comments\/the_corporation\/\">corporation<\/a> and their quest for global monetary domination.\u00a0 That\u2019s one of the reasons why I\u2019ve always had respect for academia and nonprofits.\u00a0 Their mission is distinctly different.<\/p>\n<p>To me, that difference also plays out distinctly in our experiences of the site itself.\u00a0 Just as a purely commercially-driven entity like TVGuide.com has blinking banners, four frames of moving flash ads threatening the squeezed content area, the <a title=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wikipedia.org\/\">Wikipedia<\/a>, a nonprofit, completely publically-supported free \u201cencyclopedia\u201d provides clear, readable navigation, helpful indicators, and an endless wealth of content and interaction for the individual and the communities.<\/p>\n<p><em>Global knowledge communication<\/em>?\u00a0 Seems like a much better concept of the world to me.<\/p>\n<p>Go to the Wikipedia site:\u00a0 <a title=\"Wikimedia:Wikimedia needs your help\" href=\"http:\/\/wikimediafoundation.org\/wiki\/Wikimedia_needs_your_help\">Wikimedia needs your help<\/a> in its 21-day fund drive.
