{"id":6181,"date":"2010-08-30T17:04:14","date_gmt":"2010-08-31T00:04:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/emilychang.com\/?p=6181"},"modified":"2010-09-19T17:12:46","modified_gmt":"2010-09-20T00:12:46","slug":"icons-of-the-web","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emilychang.com\/blog\/2010\/08\/icons-of-the-web\/","title":{"rendered":"Icons of the Web"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"lightbox\" title=\"iconsoftheweb\" href=\"http:\/\/emilychang.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/iconsoftheweb.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6182\" title=\"iconsoftheweb\" src=\"http:\/\/emilychang.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/iconsoftheweb-550x549.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"549\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A large-scale scan of the top million web sites (per <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alexa.com\/topsites\">Alexa traffic data<\/a>) was performed in early 2010 using the <a href=\"http:\/\/nmap.org\">Nmap Security Scanner<\/a> and its <a href=\"http:\/\/nmap.org\/book\/nse.html\">scripting engine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We retrieved each site&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Favicon\">icon<\/a> by first parsing the HTML for a link tag and then falling back to \/favicon.ico if that failed.  328,427 unique icons were collected, of which 288,945 were proper images.  The remaining 39,482 were error strings and other non-image files.  Our original goal was just to improve our <a href=\"http:\/\/nmap.org\/nsedoc\/scripts\/http-favicon.html\">http-favicon.nse<\/a> script, but we had enough fun browsing so many icons that we used them to create the visualization below.<\/p>\n<p>The area of each icon is proportional to the sum of the reach of all sites using that icon.  When both a bare domain name and its &#8220;www.&#8221;  counterpart used the same icon, only one of them was counted. The smallest icons&#8211;those corresponding to sites with approximately 0.0001% reach&#8211;are scaled to 16&#215;16 pixels.  The largest icon (Google) is 11,936 x 11,936 pixels, and the whole diagram is 37,440 x 37,440 (1.4 gigapixels).
